How We Test & Score Every Proxy Provider
No vendor access. No sponsored rankings. Every score on ProxyAdvice is the output of a structured, repeatable process that runs the same way for every provider — from the largest enterprise network to the newest entrant.
Our Testing Pipeline
Every provider goes through the same six-stage pipeline — no shortcuts, no exceptions. Here is exactly what happens before a score is published.
Before any connection is made, we audit the provider’s pricing page, Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and all public pool size claims. We cross-reference stated features against independent sources to flag any discrepancies upfront. Providers with materially misleading documentation are noted before testing begins.
We run automated benchmark scripts across a standardized set of 20 target domains — spanning e-commerce, search engines, social platforms, and news sites. Each proxy type (residential, datacenter, ISP, mobile) is tested separately. We record median response time, p95 latency, and connection failure rate over a minimum 72-hour window.
We sample IPs at scale to assess pool cleanliness — checking for datacenter IP contamination in residential pools, blacklisted IPs, and rotation consistency. Geo-targeting accuracy is validated at country, city, and ISP level by comparing declared location against third-party geolocation databases on 500+ sampled IPs per provider.
Our technical analyst manually runs DNS leak tests, WebRTC leak checks, and header inspection across each proxy type. We verify that the provider’s claimed anonymity tier — transparent, anonymous, or elite — matches real-world behaviour. Any provider leaking identifying headers is penalised in the final score regardless of claimed specs.
We evaluate the provider’s user dashboard for usability, onboarding clarity, and API documentation quality. Support is tested via live chat and email at three different time windows to assess real response times. Integration guides are reviewed for completeness against common use cases — scraping, browser automation, and account management.
Raw test data feeds into our standardized scoring matrix. A second team member independently reviews the compiled score against the raw data before publication. Any score where the two reviewers diverge by more than 0.5 points triggers a third-party tiebreak. The final score and full methodology notes are published together.
The Metrics That Drive Every Score
Our final score is built from six weighted metric categories. Each one is measured independently and contributes a defined percentage to the overall result.
Median response time, p95 latency, and connection success rate measured over 72 hours across 20 real target domains.
Pool cleanliness, blacklist rate, residential vs datacenter IP ratio, and geo-targeting accuracy validated across 500+ sampled IPs.
DNS leak test results, WebRTC detection, header inspection, and actual anonymity tier versus marketed tier.
Onboarding flow, API documentation quality, dashboard clarity, and integration guide completeness for common use cases.
Live chat and email response time tested at three different time windows. Response quality scored for technical accuracy.
Cost per GB, per-IP pricing transparency, billing model fairness, and value relative to verified performance output.
Score Weighting Breakdown
Here is exactly how each metric category contributes to a provider’s final score out of 10.
Score Components — Out of 10
Weights applied equally across all provider typesTools We Use to Test
Every benchmark is reproducible. Here are the core tools our technical team uses during the evaluation process.
In-house Python scripts that send requests through each proxy to 20 real target sites, recording latency and success rate.
Three independent geolocation databases cross-referenced to validate claimed country, city, and ISP-level targeting accuracy.
Manual leak detection using browser-based and CLI tools to verify anonymity claims at the protocol level.
Sampled IPs are cross-checked against major DNSBL and commercial blacklist databases to measure pool cleanliness.
Our Fairness Pledge
The rules we hold ourselves to — published so our readers can hold us accountable.
No provider can pay to appear higher in our rankings. Scores are strictly determined by benchmark outputs and editorial evaluation.
Every article where an affiliate commission exists clearly discloses it. Affiliate relationships never influence the score assigned.
All active reviews are re-audited on a rolling monthly schedule to catch pricing changes, feature updates, and performance shifts.
User-reported inaccuracies trigger an expedited review. Confirmed errors are corrected and the correction is logged visibly in the article.
